More than 100 seniors from around the territory gathered at the East End/Look Community Centre on Monday for the opening ceremony of Senior Citizens Month 2011.

A month of activities has been planned under the theme “Generations Serving Generations: 2011 — The Year of the Engaged Older Adult.”

During the ceremony, Chief Social Development Officer Annie Malone-Frett encouraged the community to support the month’s events, which include games that will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

Sylvia Rhymer, the guest speaker, encouraged seniors to teach young people about the past.

“What are we passing to the other generation? What is there to follow?” Ms. Rhymer asked the seniors. “There are so many things that we can pass down to the young generation as we meet them.”
