Nearly 100 representatives from various non-profit groups around the territory responded to government’s call for input on upcoming legislation to regulate non-profit organisations on Thursday.

They aired concerns about the current draft of the legislation, which would require an annual registration fee and submission of audited financials for many non-profit organisations in the territory.

David Archer, permanent secretary in the Deputy Governor’s Office, said the new legislation will bring the territory into compliance with international anti-money laundering standards, but some meeting attendees said the law goes too far.

“I think you all have sort of an overblown idea of any non-profit,” said Judith Charles, using Family Support Network, the organisation that provides services to families dealing with domestic violence, as an example. According to Ms. Charles’ research, an audit of FSN would cost at least $3,000, she said.

Mr. Archer told the group that the DGO was noting their concerns and would take them into account as the law is revised.

“Don’t think we’re going to leave from here and go directly to House of Assembly,” he said.
