Six students from various secondary schools throughout the territory
sat around the long conference table on Tuesday at the Central Administration Building as H. Lavity Stoutt Community College officials and other organisers laid out plans for the Islands of the World XII Conference to be held from May 29 to June 1 at the college.
“We decided we didn’t just want to attract adults for this conference,” said conference chairwoman Dana Lewis-Ambrose, who also lectures at HLSCC. “We wanted to make sure the youth was a big part of it.”
The conference is held every two years by the International Small Islands Studies Association. This year’s theme is “Globalisation: Islands Adapting to Change,” and discussion topics are to include agriculture, fisheries, disaster management, tourism, sustainable development and others, according to HLSCC President Dr. Karl Dawson.
Organisers stressed the importance of this year’s youth forum, which will focus largely on HIV, AIDS and sexual health.
