The Virgin Gorda Summer Jam basketball league got under way at the Jeffery Caines Arena in The Valley Saturday evening with two games being played.

Hundreds of spectators turned out for the event, which wrapped up around 2 a.m. The league was prefaced with an opening ceremony that featured remarks from government officials, sponsors and organisers.

There are more than 20 teams in the league, which is divided into three categories:  A (under 12), B (13-18) and C (under 19).

The league is composed mostly of VG teams, but each division has at least one team from Tortola competing, according to VG Basketball Association President Trevor West Stevens.

The president said the league is important because it helps stimulate the island’s economy and continues to develop youth basketball players.

Games will be played on Friday and Saturdays. The league is to wrap up in late November, weather permitting.
