Virgin Islands Search and Rescue needs money to be able to save lives, so the non-profit organisation holds various fundraisers throughout the year.

On Sunday, VISAR hosted one of its largest fundraising events: Swim the Sound was held in Virgin Gorda’s North Sound and featured swimmers, stand-up paddlers, a barbecue and beach games.

This year, 50 swimmers and 25 stand-up paddlers competed in the event, which started at Saba Rock Resort and finished at Leverick Bay Resort and Marina.

“There were a few less than last year, but it was still a very good event,” said VISAR volunteer crewmember Nicole McLoughlin.

She added that the weather helped make the event a success.

“We were expecting a lot of rain and thunderstorms,” Ms. McLoughlin said. “It was calmer than expected. Everything went smoothly.”

All told, the non-profit organisation netted about $11,000 at the event, and organisers are expecting more money to trickle in through sponsorships.

VISAR’s annual operating budget is about $200,000. The money is used for training, medical supplies, equipment and maintaining the boats Spirit and Gorda Peak.
