Renewable energy was the focus of the projects at The BVI National Commission for UNESCO’s World Science Day for Peace and Development competition.

High school students from around the territory were invited to submit a project, said Dr. Allison Flax-Archer, the commission’s secretary general. Students built models of wind turbines, solar-powered homes and other projects for the competition.

Jessica Gordon, an Elmore Stoutt High School student, won for her solar oven.

Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn said he hopes students in the territory will continue to look at sustainability and science as an opportunity for their future careers.

Mr. Walwyn urged the students to create “a sustainable future.”
