A 73-year-old man died after swimming in rough water at Cane Garden Bay Monday, police said.

Dieter Heinrich Vahl, a German tourist who was visiting the territory with his wife aboard the cruise ship Aida, was pronounced dead at noon at Peebles Hospital, according to Police Information Officer Diane Drayton.

Val Rhymer, owner and manager of Myett’s Garden and Grille in CGB, said her staff alerted her to the incident as paramedics on the beach began to administer first aid.

She added that there were hundreds of people on the beach Monday — two cruise ships were docked in Road Town — and pointed out that there were no lifeguards on duty at the time.

“The seas were rough,” Ms. Rhymer said. “No one should have been in the water at all. It was very dangerous. But no one told them not to.”
