Before taking $5,000 out of Bassano Hendricks’ pocket on July 30, Michael Ashby allegedly told him, “This is an extortion,” according to Crown prosecutors.

Mr. Ashby and Royston Carey appeared in Magistrates’ Court Friday charged with robbery, an indictable offence.

According to prosecutors, Messrs. Ashby and Carey were among five men who took $5,000 from Mr. Hendricks at Violet’s bar.

When they were questioned by police on Aug. 15, both men separately denied being involved in the alleged incident, the prosecutor added.

“I don’t even know who these men are,” Mr. Ashby said during the proceedings Friday.

Magistrate Tamia Richards said she needed time to consider making bail offers for the two defendants, and she remanded them to prison.
