Government officials and representatives of a major Virgin Gorda resort have signed a training agreement that will see Virgin Islanders receive additional education and training in hospitality.

The memorandum of understanding, inked by Premier Dr. Orlando Smith and Rosewood Little Dix Bay Asset Manager Jackie Brown, will see the resort grant a Virgin Islander a full four-year scholarship, including room, board and tuition to the Miami-based Johnson and Wales University to study hospitality or tourism.

The scholarship can also be used to obtain a graduate degree in the subject, according to Government Information Services.

Additionally, Rosewood, which operates 19 luxury resorts worldwide and is building another 10, will give another Virgin Islander a six-month paid internship that will begin at its Dallas, Texas headquarters, according to RLDB Managing Director Edward Linsley.

He added that the internship will allow the student to learn varied aspects of the hospitality industry, including product design, planning, finance and human resources.

At a signing ceremony held last Thursday, Dr. Smith said that giving VI students an opportunity for overseas study will help boost the territory’s competitive position in the long run.
