The territory is a step closer to the arbitration tribunal required by the 2010 Labour Code, officials announced last week.

The president and registrar of the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago visited the territory last week in an effort to advise the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour and the Labour Department on strategies for the tribunal’s creation and administration, according to Government Information Services.

Deputy Premier Dr. Kedrick Pickering said the Feb. 9-12 visit by Deborah Felix and Noel Inniss was part of a plan to develop the labour sector and “place the department and government in line with international labour laws.”

Blaming the recent delays on “various setbacks,” Dr. Pickering, who is the minister of natural resources and labour, said the tribunal “will mean that persons within the private sector, employer and employee, will be provided with a greater opportunity for social justice within the Virgin Islands labour force.”

Clive Pegus, the primary draftsman of the 2010 Labour Code, also came to the territory from Feb. 9-14 to provide consultancy advice to the department and ministry regarding amendments and regulations for the law and a labour policy.
