“I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it,” Ms. Wakeling said.

The Zimbabwe native believes she is the first woman to complete the paddle around the island.

Ms. Wakeling knew she wanted to attempt the trip around Tortola when she arrived in the territory in October.

“I actually wanted to SUP around all of the BVIs,” she said. “I didn’t make around all 60, but I did about 20.”
