The BVI Tourist Board has big plans to market the territory’s tourism product, but it needs millions more to carry them out, officials said recently.

The organisation, which lacks other independent sources of revenue, had requested a government grant of $17.1 million in 2014: $13 million for operations and an additional $4.1 million, according to the 2014 report of the Standing Finance Committee.

According to the 2014 budget, however, the BVITB received a $10.5 million government grant instead.

BVITB Director Sharon Flax-Mars told legislators that it is “difficult” for the board to do what is needed with only $10 million, its typical allotment. The extra monies, she said, are needed for additional marketing, infrastructure improvements, and “major special projects” aimed at elevating arrivals.
