An immigration officer was charged recently in connection with ongoing investigations into human smuggling, the Police Information Office announced last Tuesday.

Naima Grante, 35, of Old Plantation, was charged with three counts of breach of trust in a public office, the police said.

Ms. Grante remained in police custody, while three men native to the Dominican Republic were in the custody of the Department of Immigration in relation to the investigation, police said.

The charges resulted from ongoing joint investigations by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, the Department of Immigration, and His Majesty’s Customs, according to police.

“Commissioner of Police Mark Collins applauded the ongoing efforts of all the officers that are part of this important investigation and commended the cross-agency cooperation which aided in this result,” according to a press release from the PIO.

Police are asking anyone with knowledge of suspicious activity that might help in inquiries into human smuggling through the territory to call the anonymous tip line at 800- 8477.
