Warm tones from a keyboard, funky bass guitar and six back-up singers laid down the musical foundation for Kimberly Burrell, a Grammy Award-winning singer whose voice filled the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Saturday night.

The United States gospel artist kicked off HLSCC’s 2012-13 Performing Arts Series, which will include eight performances — jazz, calypso, classical and ballet acts, among others — in addition to the college’s annual summer and Christmas concerts, said HLSCC Performing Arts Coordinator Linette Baa.

“We’ve been trying to continue with a diverse lineup and put together something everyone can enjoy,” Ms. Baa said after Saturday’s show. “That’s always the goals.”
