Dressed in their school uniforms, the members of the Elmore Stoutt High School Junior Steel Pan Band stood stock still, and a hush fell over the audience.

Then, the band director made a sign, and the students began a rendition of “Jingle Bells” with a reggae beat. When they finished, the crowd cheered loudly.

It was the first song of the school’s annual Christmas concert at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall on Saturday. The event, which packed the venue, featured students from the school’s music programme.

Other groups also performed during the evening, including the Junior Concert Band, the choir and the Senior Concert Band. The Senior Steel Pan Band brought the night to a close.
