As Felicia McMillan’s sister was dying of breast cancer about two years ago, Ms. McMillan was diagnosed with the same disease.

“It was a whole lot of mixed emotions,” said Ms. McMillan, who completed her radiation treatment about a year ago. “My sister was dying with breast cancer and I was faced with the most sensible thing to do, which was to go get treatment. Rather than being really emotional, it was more of an urgency to make the right decision.”

The cancer survivor now encourages other women to get regular breast exams, which help detect the disease early.

That was why she was one of nearly 300 people who turned up on Saturday for Sensus Gym’s Colour Me Pink 5k Run/Walk, which raised more than $16,000 for breast-cancer prevention and treatment.

Before the activity began, attendees dumped bags of coloured cornstarch over each other and sprayed one another with water.

By the time the race started, they were covered with pink, purple, orange, yellow and other colours.

Since the event was launched 10 years ago, nearly 600 free-mammogram vouchers have been given out to women in the VI, said Mike Adamson, who co-owns Sensus Gym with his wife Lisa.
