Not all college examinations are marked by lecturers. Some are graded by concertgoers.

On Friday, about a dozen music students from H. Lavity Stoutt Community College entertained an audience of nearly 300 people at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium in return for a good grade.

“This evening, we will take you back to the 60s, 70s, some of the 80s — and we may just give you a tad bit of the 90s too,” emcee Debra Hodge said at the start of the show.

The concert was the first ever organised by the HLSCC Stingray Singers, a group that now consists of students from the college’s new music performance class, said HLSCC President Dr. Karl Dawson.

Though HLSCC has offered music courses in the past, this school year marked the first time it offered a performance class, he added.
“They perform weekly at Bamboushay, and I’m glad to see that they are getting a following,” Dr. Dawson said.

Music lecturer Eric Christian, who leads the group, said part of the students’ grade depended on the crowd’s response, but he added that the lineup was planned with the audience in mind.
