For more than 10 years, Thaddeus Martin has bought roses, chocolates or teddy bears for Valentine’s Day gifts. This year, he plans to go all out.

He is not planning to frequent the clothing stores whose windows are filled with red and pink, or to make a reservation at one of the restaurants that will offer special menu items.

Mr. Martin plans to book a hotel room for a night and have rose petals scattered from the door to the bed, he said, adding that romantic music will be playing in the background as his girlfriend enters the room.

Other residents’ plans are less extravagant. Philip Richards hasn’t decided what to give his significant other, but he knows where he’ll send it.

“I do the norm, which is to go to the store, buy something, and send it to the office and not to the house, because they want everyone to see what they got,” Mr. Richards said.
