“When I went down by the Montserrat, they give me something; I ask, ‘What is that?’” sang Elmore Stoutt. “She said, ‘Boy, what? That is goat wat-er!’”

Backed by a fungi band, the folklorist was serenading a laughing crowd at the New Life Baptist Church’s annual International Night on Saturday evening.

As Mr. Stoutt joked about food from different cultures, attendees sampled fare from 15 countries and territories being served in decorated booths around the church’s parking lot.

“Each country, they display their food, they display their talent, their culture, however they want to depict their country,” event chair Marieta Headley said of the annual contest.

As the sun began to set, participants marched in a parade, waving flags and showing off their traditional costumes.
