On Monday afternoon at De Loose Mongoose in Trellis Bay, Shelcy Hodge was mixing a virgin cocktail using guava, golden apple, passion fruit and other ingredients.

“This cocktail didn’t cost much,” the tenth-grade Elmore Stoutt High School student told a panel of three judges during the Signature Drink Competition hosted by the BVI Tourist Board. “Most of the fruits I used came from my grandmother’s garden.”

That bit of information gave her an edge over other contestants, judges said after sampling non-alcoholic drinks made by five students as teachers and parents looked on.
“When she said she got her ingredients from her grandmother’s garden: I think we all decided in unison that that’s the kind of produce you want coming from an island,” said judge Edward Nightingale, Peter Island Resort’s food and beverage manager. “You want people to be aware and be proud of something grown locally.”

Ms. Hodge, whose winning cocktail will be featured in De Loose Mongoose’s drink menu, was pleased.

“I was going to do a passion fruit lemonade, but I heard a lot of people were going to do that too,” she said after she was announced winner. “So I switched it up and combined a number of fruits and eventually arrived at the one I named Tropical Fusion.”
