Recently, one of Claudia Diaz’s cats was poisoned — a “horrible experience” she hopes is never repeated, she said on Friday as she joined hundreds of residents at Government House to raise funds for the BVI Humane Society. 
The annual “Paws for a Cause” fundraiser featured wine tasting, an auction and live music.
Proceeds from the event will go towards securing a piece of land and building a new animal shelter for the territory.
“It is very good that people organise such events as this,” Ms. Diaz said. “Unfortunately, there is not enough respect for animals on the island. There should be a call to make people aware of this.”
