Preparations for the 2011 August Emancipation Festival are in full swing, and residents should expect exciting events, according to Collin Scatliffe, chairman of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee.

“Festival is in full gear,” Mr. Scatliffe said during a Tuesday press conference at the BVI Tourist Board’s Road Town office.

Preliminary festivities will kick off with the start of the Heritage Month activities on July 21. Related events will include a service at the Sunday Morning Well in Road Town and a concert at the Festival Village Grounds, featuring Papa San and local artists.

Alvera Caines-Maduro, chair of the Prince and Princess Committee, announced that the pageant will be held on July 17, with eight couples competing for the crown.

The Calypso Competition will be held on July 23, with nine calypsonians vying for the title.
