When Tito Puente Jr. began his performance at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium on Saturday, his audience of about 450 was mostly quiet and subdued.

By the time he left the stage, more than half of the crowd was dancing as the Puerto Rican performer and his nine-member band played Latin jazz.

The show was part of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College’s ongoing Performing Arts Series.

“We want you guys to feel free to dance,” Mr. Puente told the crowd at the start of the evening. “This music is built for dancing. I want you guys to get up and enjoy the music.”

Dressed in a white suit and a pink dress shirt, he danced himself as he played silver cymbals and other percussion instruments arranged in front of him.
