“Tis man like you, tis man like he does make good woman go bad,” members of Leon and the Hot Shots sang on Saturday in Spanish Town during the Fungi Fest and Food Fair that was held as part of the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival.

As the musicians played, children in costumes made from the territory’s official cloth danced in pairs for a growing crowd.

The scene brought back memories for Roy O’Neal.
“This was how it used to be back in the days,” said the VG senior. “When I was young like them, I danced a lot, and I think I even danced better. The children just need more guidance, and they will do well in carrying the culture alive.”

At EAPS, students are getting that guidance: School officials often play fungi music on Fridays and encourage them to dance, said teacher Rosina Warrican, who accompanied the group to VG on Saturday.

“It’s a part of our history and part of who we are; it’s part of a culture that is dying out,” Ms. Warrican said. “We start teaching the students our dances from grade one so by the time they are up to grade six, they know the basics and can learn the complete routines.”

The students seemed to enjoy it too.
