By 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Trenita Hodge was hard at work, laying out pieces of fabric on a table.

There were different patterns, shapes and designs. Most of the pieces were left over from fabric she had used before, while some was from old clothing or new material.

Soon, all the pieces were arranged to form part of a king-sized quilt she was making.

She then sprayed each piece with starch before ironing it. After the pieces were ironed, she laid them back on the table.

Then she started sewing them together by hand, two at a time.

“It is very relaxing,” Ms. Hodge said, paying close attention to the needle and thread she held. “To me, my work brings me closer to God and closer to nature. I could hear the chickens, the birds. It puts me in one with everything.”
