The usual “good evening” or “hello” were not good enough at Government House on Friday during Guess Whose Shoe, an event organised by the Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town.

“When you are in a party where shoes and feet are the most important things, then you have to walk with your head looking down and your eyes cast on the floor,” Governor Boyd McCleary said at the start of the event. “It is not disrespectful to the person’s face. It is just because that is all that matters: the feet.”

Nearly 150 participants danced, sipped drinks and tried to guess which Rotarians’ feet were pictured in the photographs that lined the porch of the Government House.

While a deejay provided entertainment, attendees competed in different categories of footwear competition: ugliest shoe, highest heels, most colourful shoe, most elegant shoe, and most unique shoe.

Besides playing host, Mr. McCleary competed for the highest heel title: While female competitors strutted colourful shoes as high as six inches, he climbed on a foot-high stepladder. The tactic drew cheers and earned him first place.
