Yulissa Hurtado

Ms. Hurtado is originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The 29-year-old has been a referee in the Virgin Islands since 2006. She officiates in most of the basketball leagues in the territory.

Are there many female referees in the Virgin Islands?

I am the only girl in the BVI refereeing basketball.

What is that like?

It feels good. The players take me serious and I take the game serious.

When did you get involved in being a referee?

In 2006 when I was in Santo Domingo I started training through FIBA.

Did you play basketball before you were a referee?

Yes, I did. I started playing when I was 9 years old. I played for my community. But I haven’t played basketball in the BVI.

What position did you play in basketball?

I played them all.

Why did you become a basketball referee?

When I was playing basketball, I would also score the games. One of my friends in the Dominican Republic said there was an opportunity for me to become a referee. So I tried it and from there I liked it. I really like the game and how I get to interact with the players on the court.

How many games do you referee a year?

Whoa! I am thinking more than 100. You can have tournaments and leagues, and games add up quick.

What is your day job?

I am a joiner. I do woodwork with my uncle.

What do you enjoy more: playing basketball or refereeing?

I like being a referee more. I used to like playing, but it is not for me. But I like the sport and it keeps me in shape.

Do you referee for any other sports?

No, just basketball.

Do you watch sports on television?

Mainly soccer and basketball. And once in a while I watch volleyball.

Do you have kids?

I have one girl. She is 4 years old. She comes to the games with me. She enjoys the games.

When she gets older, is she going to be a basketball player?

I don’t know. I started when I was 9 years old. My brother was one of the players for my country. He was one of the best. So that is how I learned.

What are some of your goals when it comes to basketball?

I would like to teach young people about basketball.
