After several rounds of competition at Virgin Gorda’s Catholic Community Centre on Saturday, Tecora Morgan ousted three other young women to become the new Miss Easter Festival.

For the beauty queen, the show was the first of many public appearances in the coming days: She will participate in several of the events that will get under way on Saturday at the Spanish Town Market.

As of yesterday afternoon, preparations for the three-day VG Easter Festival were well under way, said Jerrell George, public relations officer of the organising committee.

SATURDAY

Food fair

The events kick off with a food fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. at the Spanish Town Market. Students from several primary schools on VG will showcase their cultural attire while Grace Vanterpool, the festival honouree, demonstrates baking in clay ovens. Several fungi bands will perform, and there will be plait pole demonstrations, among other activities.

Car show

Several souped-up vehicles will be on display at a car show held today at the Little Dix Bay Grounds from noon.

Opening ceremony

At 7 p.m., the opening ceremony will kick off at the Grace Vanterpool Festiville. VG soca and calypso musician Tino Mark is among the headliners. Mr. Mark is known for songs including “Facebook Mash Up Life” and “Rock and a Hard Place.”

Onyan and the Burning Flames from Antigua is also expected to perform. The soca group was formed in 1984 and has graced stages throughout the Caribbean. Their songs include “Stylee Tight,” “Burning Flames Rule,” and “Pig Tall and Pig Mouth.”

Also on the lineup is Tallpree, a Grenadian calypso and soca performer known for the songs “Jab All Over” and “Jab Nation.”

SUNDAY

Wet Fete

A deejay will provide entertainment at the Wet Fete scheduled for Sunday at St. Thomas Bay. Water sports activities are to kick off at 10 a.m.

Egg hunt

An Easter egg hunt will start at 1 p.m. at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour. The event, organised by the Valley Sound Lions Club, will feature activities for the entire family.

Calypso Competition

Seven performers will compete to unseat Calypso Monarch Sistah Joyce. In a recent interview with the Beacon, the monarch pledged to defend her title.

Music

After the competition, Fyah Empress of St. Vincent and the Grenadines will perform. The SVG Ragga Monarch Queen 2013 is famous for songs such as “Ah Ketch It” and “True Vincy.”

Vibe will perform on VG for the first time since changing its name from VI Showtime Band.

St. Croix’s Stylee Band is scheduled to close the night. The band’s song “Drive It” has aired frequently on Virgin Islands radio stations since last year.

MONDAY

Rise and Shine Tramp

The Rise and Shine Tramp begins at around 4 a.m. in Spanish Town. Kylo, a member of Stylee Band; Boss from Showtime Band; and Jougo from Vibe each will head a party truck.

Parade

About 20 troupes, majorettes and other groups will participate at the Easter Monday Parade, which begins at Spanish Town around noon. After the parade, DJ Smasher will provide entertainment at the Grace Vanterpool Festiville.

Other bands for the night include VG’s Caution Band, Final Faze and King Man.

Music

The Easter Festival comes to a close with Cool Session Brass Band from St. John. The group is known for songs such as “Fever,” “Calling For You” and “Sweet Love.”
