Rather than featuring the work of just one person, this month’s showcase at the Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum hints at the breadth of artistic talent in the territory, showing the paintings, photography and mixed media works of 15 Virgin Islands artists.

“I’m so proud of you guys that you have stepped up to the plate,” Olive Vanterpool told a group of artists and others gathered for a reception at the museum on Friday.

Ms. Vanterpool explained that when a previously planned exhibit fell through, she recruited the help of her husband Reuben Vanterpool, who in turn rounded up his friends in the territory’s community of artists and convinced them to take part.

Mr. Vanterpool, a painter, introduced several artists whose works are on display for the exhibit, many of whom are also featured in the 2013 BVI House exhibit in London under the theme “Lantern Days.”

The works being shown at the BVI House exhibit had been sent away the previous day, so Mr. Vanterpool showed slide images of them.
