A Virgin Islands student will represent the territory next month in a leadership conference held in advance of this year’s Commonwealth Games.

Amber Wheatley, a Virgin Gorda native, is the first VI representative to attend the 33 Fifty Commonwealth Youth Leadership Programme, which will be held from July 17-20 in Scotland.

She was selected from thousands of applicants to join 99 other participants from throughout the Commonwealth in exploring the question, “What role does the youth of the Commonwealth need to play in progress toward low-carbon economies?”

Ms. Wheatley also was chosen from the 100 participants to present the solutions developed in the workshop to Prince Charles and the Commonwealth Business Leaders Conference, according to GIS.

The 21-year-old is currently studying medicine at Swansea University in the UK. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science and hopes to return to the VI to practise as an oncologist.

An alumnus of Elmore Stoutt High School, Ms. Wheatley was awarded the H. Lavity Stoutt Memorial Scholarship. She previously represented the territory at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation Conference in 2008 as the Junior Minister of Tourism.

She is the daughter of Vincent and Esther Wheatley and the granddaughter of Opposition Leader Ralph O’Neal.

The 33 Fifty Youth Leadership Programme is organised by Common Purpose and the Royal Commonwealth Society as part of the Legacy Educational Programmes of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
