Rikkiya Brathwaite wants to be a performing artist when she grows up. For the past three summers, she has worked toward that goal by attending the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan.

At the centre, the vocalist has met other young people who share similar interests, she said. “It was like being in the same class with people who are just like you,” Ms. Brathwaite said of this summer’s session. “Everyone was open and making friends was very easy.”

The Cedar International School student took vocal training and learned performing techniques.

She is one of many Virgin Islands youths who refused to spend the summer parked in front of a television. Others took part in internships, worked, went to camps, played sports or participated in other activities.
