Nearly 100 volunteers flooded Gun Creek and Spanish Town on Saturday morning, cleaning up trash and reducing standing water in an effort to help rid Virgin Gorda of mosquito breeding sites.

The cleanup was organised by Project Bug Out, a collaborative volunteer initiative that began in March.

Saturday’s effort was the project’s sixth widespread cleanup, each of which has focussed on different areas of the sister island, according to Sarina Hancock, hospitality and sustainability coordinator at Eustatia Island, one of Bug Out’s stakeholders.

Bug Out’s next cleanup is scheduled for Sept. 24, but cleanups on other islands will be held this weekend. Listed below are community cleanups scheduled for Saturday and Sunday around the territory.

Saturday

• Anegada: At 6:30 a.m., meet at the Anegada District Office.

• Jost Van Dyke: At 9:30 a.m., meet at the ferry dock in Great Harbour.

• Tortola and Beef Island: At 7 a.m., meet at the left turn after exiting the Beef Island bridge on the Beef Island side.

Sunday

• Tortola: VI resident Emma Paul is organising a cleanup meeting at various times and places across Tortola. Check the Facebook page “Clean Up Tortola Day” for details.
