“And your 2014/2015 prince and princess are J’Khoy Frett and Afyah Frett,” Zoe Walcott-Macmillan announced to a packed Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall on Sunday during the Prince and Princess Show.

As fans and supporters rushed the stage, Afyah raised her hand, pointing toward heaven as though she were saying a prayer. Then they took their first walk as attendees blew vuvuzelas and snapped photographs with smart phones and iPads.

It was fitting preparation for the coming days, when the couple will appear in several August Emancipation Festival events.

J’Khoy and Afyah, who are cousins, competed against seven other couples, capturing five of eight segments in the competition.

The event, which lasted more than six hours, began with all contestants dressed in white and black outfits as they danced to a soca song by Trinidad artist Bunji Garlin.

After that, they returned to the stage in pairs to tell the audience about themselves.

For the cultural wear segment, the children displayed a variety of costumes in the territorial colours. And for talent, their acts included skits, songs and steel-pan performances.

T-Jani Clarke and Shannia Prescott were the first runners-up, D’Mani Cupid and Brianna Blyden second, and Javier and Javiola Hodge third.
