“Everybody goes to the seawalls back in Guyana, and you have food and drinks and music,” said Marvin Grant, president of the Association of Guyanese living in the Virgin Islands.

The association, which was founded about 30 years ago, has been hosting the event in Tortola for about 22 years, he said.

“We’ve just miniaturised it and brought it here, which adds to the diversity of the BVI,” Mr. Grant said.

Awards given at the event included the highest flying kite, the most patriotic kite, and the prettiest kite. Although only a handful of hopefuls entered the competition, Mr. Grant said he was pleased with the diversity of the winners.

“The prize winners were from various places, so that was good to see,” he said.
