Tucked away behind yellow concrete walls, the J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens can be easy to pass by.

That’s exactly what Elma Smith had been doing for years, she said Sunday during her first visit to the park.

“I had been meaning to come in for ages, so when I heard about today’s event, it seemed the perfect time,” Ms. Smith said.

Like others attending the National Parks Trust’s annual Festival in the Gardens, Ms. Smith watched demonstrations from Just Be You models, the Adagio Dance School’s junior dance team, and the BVI Elite Sky Dancers while sitting under the shade of a tent in the garden’s open meadow.

“I’m surprised there aren’t more people here, actually. It’s really nice,” Ms. Smith said.

She added that her favourite part of the festival was seeing the creative displays around the gardens, like the peacock made of flowers set up by the staff of Stems Flower Boutique.

“It reminds me of those parade floats you see on TV,” she said.
