Lashauna Marshall wore glitter on her face and a short madras skirt as she tried to recruit new members for the Dynamic Twirlers majorette group for the August Emancipation Festival.

Ms. Marshall sat under a tent surrounded by a display of parade costumes during the “block party” held on Saturday along De Castro Drive to kick off a series of events leading up to the Festival.

She was among many organisers hoping to attract participation.

Attendees at the street event also were treated to entertainment by Vibes Band, Krosfyah and Extreme Band.

At about 10 p.m. on Saturday, nearly two dozen girls had signed up as prospective members of the Dynamic Twirlers.
“I am hoping to get as many girls as possible,” Ms. Marshall said. “My aim is to get the group to 150 girls.”
