More than 630 businesses have registered with government in hopes of receiving a generator or a small loan, according to Premier Dr. Orlando Smith.

While speaking at a press conference last Thursday, Dr. Smith (R-at large) touted that statistic as part of his government’s multipronged business assistance effort.

“We have designed four special programmes to assist small and medium enterprises,” the premier said. “We will support them with power generation, grants of up to $10,000, loan guarantees up to $25,000, and [a] customer service and business hub to temporarily conduct some of their business affairs.”

Dr. Smith, who also serves as the minister of finance, did not provide an exact timeline on the implementation of each of these programmes, though he said he hopes to launch them in “the coming weeks.”

The business hub is located on the second floor of the Sebastian Building on Administration Drive, in the Department of Trade, Investment Promotion and Consumer Affairs. It is open for businesses to use from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

What that physical space entails, however, is uncertain. Trade department officials on Tuesday declined to discuss the business hub or to let this reporter see it.

Karia Christopher, the director of the department, could not be reached for comment.

In addition to local businesses, government is also looking to assist individual construction workers.

Last week, the Labour Department invited construction workers to register for a database, which will be utilised by employers, according to Government Information Services.

Labour’s registration desk is located in the Central Administration Building breezeway. For more information call 468-2147.
