The reception was attended by Premier Dr. Orlando Smith and performer Morris Mark, who was recognised for his efforts to promote education on Virgin Gorda and other islands.

“The best part about the job? Giving back to the community,” said Ina Williams, a volunteer who has been involved with the programme for five years.

Hard at work since July, the staff includes newcomers and veterans who have been with the co-op from the beginning.

“It’s great that all these kids can learn some skills and have something to do during the summertime,” said Heidi Schumann, a swim instructor.

This year, before regular lessons in swimming, fishing and general boating, the co-op led a pilot sailing programme in partnership with the Jost Van Dykes Preservation Society. The campers, aged 4-17, were taught a range of practical skills such as swim techniques, knot tying, basic medical training and safety on deck.
