Three H. Lavity Stoutt Community College graduates are scheduled to take part in the 57th United States Presidential Inauguration on Monday and Tuesday in Washington DC.

Esteban Smith, Akeem Howell and Andrea France are among university students from around the world who will participate in the event.

As a collegiate Inaugural Scholar, Mr. Smith will have the opportunity to interact with historians, political experts and decision makers to discuss campaign strategy and presidential politics, according to a press release from HLSCC.

Inaugural Scholars also get the chance to watch the inaugural parade, as President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and their families make their way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the US Capitol Building to the White House.

“It will be such an honour to attend such an auspicious occasion. I am proud to represent Texas A&M University – Commerce, my current university, and HLSCC, which has afforded me such amazing opportunities,” Mr. Smith said in the press release.

Mr. Howell and Ms. France are both members of the Lee University Festival Choir, a combined chorus of the university’s seven vocal ensembles that will perform at the inauguration.

They will take the stage immediately before the official swearing-in ceremonies at midday on Monday, according to HLSCC.

“It is a privilege to represent the British Virgin Islands and Lee University on probably one of the greatest political platforms in the world, at least in our generation and in US history,” Mr. Howell said.

HLSCC President Dr. Karl Dawson is encouraging the community to watch the ceremony.

“It is not every day that we get to see our children on the world stage,” Dr. Dawson said.

“Imagine just a few years ago they were all here with us; now they are living their lives abroad and doing great things.”
