While standing in front of thousands of residents at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex on Thursday, best friends Makayla Maduro and Divannia Hill took a quick break to take a selfie: They used a smart phone to capture a photo of themselves, with their fellow graduates in the background.

The pair was delivering the valedictory speech at the Elmore Stoutt High School graduation ceremony.

Ms. Maduro, the valedictorian, and Ms. Hill, the salutatorian, were among 153 seniors who received their diplomas during the graduation ceremony on Thursday. Thirty-six members of the class were honour roll students.
During the ceremony, the graduates heard from education officials and community members who advised them about how to handle life after high school.

Keynote speaker Anthea Smith encouraged the students to make positive choices in life. “Don’t settle; everything is possible,” Ms. Smith said. “You just have to make the right choices that will help you to get where you want to go.”
