The American visitors joined friends on chartered sailboats to tour Anegada, Virgin Gorda, Scrub Island and Norman Island.

Many attendees were former participants of the annual Black Boaters Summit, which is aimed at introducing African Americans to the joys of sailing.

Joan Jackson, who has been visiting the VI for the past 15 years, said the reunion was a great success.

She explained that she first visited the islands as a participant of the Black Boaters Summit, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.

“The reunion was important because we wanted to remember coming to the BVI over the past 20 years and the lifelong friends we met and even some marriages,” she said.

The BVI 2017 Reunion welcomed 332 people who sailed with No Drama Vacations, Downriggers, Nauti by Nature, E Dock and Friends, Sailfete and the Universal Sailing Club, along with independent captains.
“Our itineraries this year were different for each group, but we were all at Anegada on Sunday,” Ms. Jackson told the Beacon. “About 80 participants attended snorkeling classes and others spent time on the beaches of the island. The evening included a lobster buffet dinner at Anegada Reef Hotel and an evening of dancing.”

Another popular stop was at Virgin Gorda, where some participants visited Spring Bay and The Baths.
“The evening was spent enjoying live entertainment on the docks at Spanish Town with a luau and happy hours on several of the boats,” Ms. Jackson said, adding that many of the participants plan to return to the territory soon.
