CharterPort BVI hosted students from St. George’s Primary School on Friday as part of its annual spring yacht show, giving the youngsters a chance to see what it’s like to work in the marine industry.

Other events included yacht shows all day on Friday and Saturday, a cooking demonstration on Friday afternoon, and private receptions each night.

The show, which was meant to give charter brokers a chance to meet new crew and check out the boats on display, had a turnout of 26 brokers and 19 vessels, according to CharterPort BVI manager Dick Schoonover.

The student tour took place while attendees were still arriving.

“What is this area called? Does anyone know?” Zimaya captain Sheldon Lindsay asked a group of eight class-two students as they boarded the yacht.

After some deliberation, several youngsters gave the correct answer: the cockpit.

“That’s right,” Mr. Lindsay said before taking the group through the rest of the boat.

The captain went on to show off the Zimaya’s navigation system, quizzing the students on the various countries in the Caribbean that were displayed on the screen.
