The territory’s Rotary clubs and the BVI Red Cross are inviting residents to come out Saturday and assist in cleaning up the mud and debris that washed over Road Town during the flooding on Monday and Tuesday.

Rotarians from here and the United States Virgin Islands will be among the volunteers, Karia Christopher, president of the Rotary Club of Tortola, said during a press conference at the BVI Finance offices on Friday morning.

Beginning at 7 a.m. volunteers will gather to start cleaning the parking lot at Sunny Caribbee before moving on to other areas, the president explained.

Rotarian Lorna Smith, the wife of Premier Dr. Orlando Smith, also joined in the plea for volunteers

“I am appealing to the whole community to come out,” she said. “Come with your shovels, your rakes, your brooms and what have you, and let’s get it all done.”

Apart from cleaning, the clubs will host food drives at various grocery stores to collect food and other supplies for families who have been displaced by the floods, said Monique Peters, president of the Rotary Club Sunrise Club of Road Town.

“We are asking persons to kindly donate not just food, but, more importantly, essential items,” Ms. Peters said. “Very simple things like toilet paper, diapers, sanitary napkins, toiletries: These things are very important.”

The organisations also launched a hotline — 343-7139 — for residents in need of assistance.
