Around 4 p.m. on Sunday, East End resident Isaiah Samuel arrived at Long Bay Beach on Beef Island just in time to watch fishermen bring their catch ashore to be weighed.

“I always come here every year just to get some fish,” Mr. Samuel said of the annual Fishermen’s Day event as he approached the stage where David and Frank Chinnery had placed a large fish-filled cooler to be weighed by Conservation and Fisheries officer Ken Pemberton.

The Chinnerys, who had launched their boat Tango before dawn, were among four groups of fishermen who returned in time to weigh their catch.
“Wahoo! This is a big one,” said Sam Davies, a CFD officer who coordinates the yearly competition.
Mr. Davies had just recorded the biggest kingfish of the day: a 38-pounder caught by the Chinnerys.
The annual competition was initially planned for June 30, but was cancelled due to inclement weather. As the fish were weighed, Deejay Wiz played Virgin Islands soca songs, entertaining hundreds of participants scattered around the beach.
