The rainy weather on Monday didn’t stop Virgin Island residents and visitors from enjoying the annual Commonwealth Day celebrations in Cane Garden Bay.

“Wherever we live in the Commonwealth, we can always benefit from being open to the ideas and encouragement of those around us,” Queen Elizabeth II said in her Commonwealth Day message, which was read by Governor John Duncan during a ceremony at Ivan Dawson Primary School. “Each of us can also make a positive difference in the lives of others by being willing to contribute and offer support.”

At 10 a.m., Destinee Cline, a fourth grade student at IDPS, raised the Commonwealth flag.

The 9-year-old, who was chosen for the duty by the school’s staff members, said she was surprised by the honour.

Principal Theodore John, who felt that the event went well, said that he was excited that IDPS was able to host the celebration.

Like the Commonwealth, the principal said, the school embraces diversity and encourages students to respect one another’s differences.
