Children from around the territory splashed their way into the 2014 August Emancipation Festival season Saturday during the Rotary Club of Road Town’s annual Kiddies Fiesta at the softball field in Road Town.

The event experimented with a new format this year, nixing the usual parade in favour of a range of activities including mini-basketball and golf games; large, inflatable waterslides; and video games.

The Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee was pleased with the new format, said Committee Chairman Marvin Blyden.

“What was happening was that a lot of the parents didn’t like the idea of putting their kids in and showing off their costume twice,” Mr. Blyden said of the reason for the change.

He added that he was pleased to see such a large crowd Saturday.

“This is good,” he said of the crowd. “That shows that we are in for a good start this year for Festival.”
