A day after police were called to control the crowd waiting to sign up for National Health Insurance, the scene was calm a few minutes after 6 a.m. on Friday morning, the last day to register without paying a late fee.

“As expected, we have a huge crowd at our offices today, being the last day of registration before penalties are applicable,” NHI officials posted on their Facebook page. “We ask that you be patient and understanding as we work to process everyone,”

As of Jan. 14, more than 33,000 people had registered, but the crowds at the office have been large all month.

Residents like Kiniesha Persaud lined up as early as 4:30 Friday morning.

“I’ve been coming by for weeks and it’s been so crowded, but I knew I had to get it done today,” Ms. Persaud said. “I was honestly trying to be first in line, but it wasn’t only me when I got here.”

NHI officials could not be reached for comment on Friday.
