“The boys’ club is about to be broken up,” said Police Commissioner Michael Matthews, eliciting more cheers.

Ms. Vanterpool, who formerly served as a chief inspector, is the first woman to serve as superintendent in the RVIPF’s history.

Politicians and police alike praised her skills and accomplishments during the hour-long ceremony at the police canteen.

“I am absolutely delighted for you,” said Mr. Matthews, who explained that he believes the appointment of a female superintendent was “long overdue.”

The commissioner then promised Ms. Vanterpool that she could always count on his support.

“We’re going to do some great things together,” he added.
